How does it work?
Flame spread assessment with a smoldering cigarette
The standard defines how to conduct a test in which the material used in upholstered furniture (fabric and filling) is exposed to a smoldering cigarette as a source of fire. The test assesses whether the combination of materials ignites easily or smolders slowly.
Test – specific test conditions
During the test, a sample representing the corner of a piece of furniture—the area most exposed to fire—is used. The test checks whether the fabric and filling smolder at the edges, spread heat, and whether the material remains safe one hour after a cigarette has been applied.
